Bacchus is a white grape variety that was initially bred in Germany but found its true home in England, where it has become one of the most popular locally-grown grapes. It is a cross between a Silvaner-Riesling hybrid and Müller-Thurgau.
Bacchus grapes are best known for their aromatic and fruity nature. Wines produced from Bacchus grapes have distinctive flavors of English hedgerow, elderflower, citrus fruits, and gooseberry. Some of the more mature Bacchus wines might also have tropical fruit flavors like melon, pineapple, and peach.
This variety of grape is early budding and ripens quite early, often gaining high sugar levels. This varietal tends to produce wines with medium acidity, which makes it popular for blending with other varieties to improve the balance and depth in wines.
It is most commonly used to produce single varietal wines, but it can also be found in blends with other varieties, particularly those produced in England. One of the defining characteristics of Bacchus wines is their strong and aromatic nose, often compared to a New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc.
