Marlborough is where modern New Zealand wine started, and Blenheim is where you base yourself — the vineyards begin a few kilometres out of town and run across roughly 100 kilometres of the Wairau and Awatere valleys.
Sauvignon Blanc is why the region is famous: the pungent, high-acid style that came out of here in the 1980s changed what the grape meant worldwide. But the Chardonnay and Pinot Noir are the reason people come back, and the traditional method sparkling is underrated.
Book ahead, whatever the season. Casual walk-ins worked here a generation ago; today almost every major cellar door prefers or requires a booking. From October through April most open seven days, roughly 10am to 5pm. Outside that, hours drop sharply — many move to four or five days a week, shorten to 11am–3pm, or switch to sales only with no tasting, and some close altogether through July and August. Winter visits need checking estate by estate.
The distance is the other thing to plan around. This is not a walkable valley: the Wairau floor is flat and wide, best done by bicycle from Renwick, or by car if you want the Awatere too.
