Waikato and the Bay of Plenty are regions located in the central North Island of New Zealand.
Waikato is the fourth largest region in the country. It includes the city of Hamilton, the country’s fourth most populous city, nearby Cambridge and Te Awamutu, and the smaller towns of Huntly, Matamata, Morrinsville, and Ngaruawahia. The region is named for the Waikato River, which traverses it from Lake Taupo to the Tasman Sea. Known for its fertile soil, Waikato is a major dairy farming region and has a strong agricultural industry. It also features several key tourist destinations, including the famous Hobbiton Movie Set from the Lord of the Rings film trilogy.
The Bay of Plenty, situated east of Waikato, is known for its beautiful coastal areas, warm climate, and bustling horticulture industry. Its largest city is Tauranga, one of New Zealand's main ports and a significant business and retail center. The region also includes the smaller cities of Rotorua and Whakatane. The Bay of Plenty is known for its geothermal activities, Maori culture, and fertile land, which produces much of the country's kiwifruit, avocados, and other fruits and vegetables.
Both regions offer plenty of opportunities to experience New Zealand's outdoor lifestyle, with numerous hiking trails, water activities, and scenic landscapes. Their diversified economies and thriving tourism sectors make them significant contributors to the New Zealand economy.
