Sunbury is a vibrant and historical town located in Victoria, Australia. It's approximately 42 kilometers north-west of Melbourne's central business district. As of the 2016 census, Sunbury had a population of around 36,000 people.
Originally inhabited by Indigenous Australians, specifically the Wurundjeri tribe, Sunbury's modern development began with the arrival of European settlers in the early 19th century. It was named after Sunbury-on-Thames, a town in the Surrey county of England.
Known for its rich wine history, Sunbury famously houses some of Victoria's oldest vineyards, including goonawarra vineyards, Craiglee, and Pitruzzello Estate Olive Grove & Vineyard. These have made it a key piece of the state's wine industry.
The town blends history and modernity. The "Rupertswood" is one of Sunbury's most famous landmarks. It is a beautiful mansion built in 1876, which was once the second largest house in Victoria state.
Sunbury is well-facilitated with transportation links. It is served by Sunbury railway station on the Bendigo and Sunbury Lines, making commutes to other towns and cities easy. In terms of sports, it's home to an active sporting community with a number of local teams across different sports including the Sunbury Lions Football Club and Sunbury United Cricket Club.
Furthermore, the Jackson's Hill precinct retains the character of the 19th century orphanage and asylum that once occupied the area, while also serving as a part of Victoria University.
