Mount Benson

Mount Benson is a prominent mountain located near Nanaimo, British Columbia, Canada. Standing at around 1,019 meters (3,343 feet) in elevation, it is the second highest point on Vancouver Island and is part of the Nanaimo Lakes region.

Mount Benson is well known for its incredible panoramic views from the summit. On a clear day, you can see as far as the mainland of British Columbia including Sunshine Coast, Greater Vancouver, Lower Mainland, and Victoria. The mountain is covered with dense forests and has several hiking trails that traverse its rugged terrain.

It's also home to a diverse variety of flora and fauna, including numerous types of mosses, ferns, and towering Douglas fir and arbutus trees. Wildlife seen around the mountain includes black bears, cougars, deer, and a variety of bird species.

Mount Benson is popular among locals and tourists alike for recreational activities such as hiking, mountain biking, bird watching, and photography. Despite its popularity, the mountain remains beautifully preserved and is considered a vital natural resource.

The land is owned and managed by a combination of private forest companies, the City of Nanaimo and the Regional District of Nanaimo. Public access is through controlled entry points and trails. The mountain is named after British Royal Navy Captain James Manby Benson, under whose command several sites around Nanaimo were surveyed.
