Coonawarra is a small, rural town in the Limestone Coast region of South Australia. It's best known for its wine production, particularly for its world-class Cabernet Sauvignon. The unique combination of the area's terra rossa soil, cool maritime climate, and limestone base provides the ideal conditions for quality grape-growing.
Coonawarra is home to a large number of wineries including some of Australia's most prestigious wine labels. It's one of the nation's oldest wine regions, having first been planted in the late 19th century by Scottish pioneer John Riddoch.
Apart from being a wine connoisseur’s paradise, Coonawarra also has beautiful landscapes filled with vineyards which are attractive for tourists. The region is known for its community events like the annual Coonawarra Cabernet Celebrations and has a thriving food scene that complements its wines.
It offers opportunities for visitors to stay at beautiful B&B’s among the vineyards, explore wine tasting tours, and enjoy the serene rustic setting. Despite its global reputation as a wine-producing region, Coonawarra remains quite untouched by commercial tourism, allowing visitors to appreciate the calm and quiet of this rural heaven.
