Northern Rivers is a region located within the Australian state of New South Wales. It encompasses an area covering approximately 20,253 square kilometres (7,820 sq mi), stretching from the border of Queensland to the north down to Grafton in the south. The region includes popular holiday destinations like Byron Bay, Lismore, Ballina, Tweed Heads, and Murwillumbah.
Known for its lush, green landscapes, mountains and pristine beaches, Northern Rivers is a biodiversity hotspot with a multitude of national parks and rainforests. It’s a part of the eastern sub-tropical coastline, with a humid climate. The area is famous for its diverse and friendly communities, vibrant arts scene and alternative culture.
The primary industry in Northern Rivers is tourism, due to its numerous beaches, climate, and natural environment. Other major industries include dairy and beef farming, tropical fruit and macadamia production, timber and manufacturing.
The region is served by several regional broadcaster television networks, radio stations, and newspapers. In terms of education, the Southern Cross University has campuses in Lismore and the Gold Coast, and there are numerous public and private schools in the region.
