Canberra District is a wine region within the South New South Wales zone in Australia. This district encircles the city of Canberra, which is the capital of Australia. The region is bounded by Gundaroo towards the north, Lake Burley Griffin, Murrumbateman and Yass towards the west, Bungendore towards the east, and Lake George towards the north-east.
This viticultural region is known for producing Shiraz and Riesling, among other varieties. The warm to hot summers with cool nights, and a distinct lack of humidity, coupled with the dry autumns and cold winters provide the perfect growing conditions for the grapes.
Reputed wineries like Clonakilla, Mount Majura Vineyard, and Four Winds Vineyard among others, hail from the Canberra District. In addition to vineyards, the region also features a host of restaurants, galleries, arts and crafts outlets that showcase the local culture and lifestyle.
It is also home to the areas of Australian Capital Territory, Bungendore, Lake George, Murrumbateman, Hall, Gundaroo, and Wamboin. Despite being a relatively newer wine region, the Canberra District has managed to gain national and international recognition for its premium cool climate wines.
