Sierra de Salamanca is a mountain range situated in the province of Salamanca, Castilla y León, Spain. It extends from the central part of the Sierra de Béjar mountain range to Portugal's border. This range is part of the larger Sistema Central System. The towering mountains, diverse flora, and fauna, coupled with unforgettable landscapes, make this region a paradise for nature lovers.
In Sierra de Salamanca, you can find wildlife like red squirrels and roe deer, and the flora includes oak and chestnut trees, along with various types of scrubs. It has more vegetal variety in comparison to the other mountain ranges of the Sistema Central due to its low altitude.
The mountainous terrains are not only a captivating sight for visitors, but also an area of rich natural resources. The region is known for its vineyards and the production of high-quality wines, especially from the Rufete grape variety. The Sierra de Salamanca even has a designated wine region, the Sierra de Salamanca DOP.
The region is also a haven for those who enjoy outdoor activities like cycling, trekking, and mountaineering. Its natural environment is preserved and protected, including the Sierra de Francia and Las Batuecas National Parks which offer a unique combination of landscape beauty and biodiversity.
Culturally, Sierra de Salamanca is rich in traditions and historical sites. Several small villages dot the landscape, each with its unique charm and character. These include the picturesque village of Miranda del Castañar, declared a Historic-Artistic Site, and the village of La Alberca, the first village in Spain to be declared a National Heritage site. These villages bear witness to the region's history with their well-preserved, traditional Spanish architecture and narrow, winding streets.
