Monterrei is a Denominación de Origen (DO) for wines located in the province of Ourense in the autonomous community of Galicia in northwest Spain. The vineyards cover an area of about 460 hectares and are situated along the valley of the river Támega. The Monterrei DO is bordered to the north by the Bierzo DO and to the south by the Douro region of Portugal.
This wine-production area is known for its rich and varied soils that contain nutrients necessary for growth of the vine. The region enjoys a somewhat unique microclimate compared to the rest of Galicia, characterized by a more continental climate, relatively low rainfall, and high summer temperatures.
The white wine grapes grown here include Doña Blanca, Godello and Treixadura, while the red wine grapes include Mencía, Arauxa (the local name for Tempranillo), and Merenzao. The wines produced in Monterrei are generally light and aromatic, with both whites and reds well-regarded for their high quality.
Despite its long history - dating back to the Roman times - Monterrei is one of the lesser-known and smaller wine regions of Spain. However, with a new generation of wine makers, the region is gaining recognition for its wines. The Monterrei DO was officially recognized in 1996.
