DO Pla de Bages is a Spanish Denominación de Origen (DO) for wines located in the province of Barcelona, in the autonomous community of Catalonia, Spain. Named for the Bages region, the DO was established in 1995, though wine-making in the area dates back to Roman times. It is known for its small production, and the area is largely made up of small to medium-sized vineyards.
The region’s soil, largely clay and limestone, combined with its Mediterranean climate, is ideal for producing a wide range of wines. There might be temperature variations from day to night, supporting the adequate ripening of grapes.
DO Pla de Bages is especially known for the production of the white grape variety Picapoll, which is not grown widely in Spain. Other grapes cultivated in this region include Macabeo, Parellada, Chardonnay, and Sauvignon blanc for white wines, and Tempranillo, Grenache, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Syrah for red wines.
The wines from DO Pla de Bages are noted for their quality and distinct character, reflecting the unique conditions of the region. The region is also involved in the production of Cava, the renowned Spanish sparkling wine.
