Plà de Bages is a Spanish Denominación de Origen Protegida (DOP) for wines located in the province of Barcelona, in the autonomous community of Catalonia, Spain. The area is known for its traditional and unique grape varieties, particularly the white Picapoll variety.
Situated in the middle of Catalonia, in the south-central part of the province of Barcelona, the area comprises 14 municipalities. It is a relatively small wine region with a strong winemaking tradition. Vineyards are planted inland in the sub-Mediterranean basin and are surrounded by mountains on all sides, which help to give the area's wines a unique character.
The Plà de Bages has a varied topography, with altitudes that range from 200 to 600 meters. This, combined with a varied climate that is generally more extreme than in other Catalan wine regions - very hot in the summer and very cold in the winter - influences the type of wines produced here.
Being a continental climate, there can be great differences in temperature from day to night, which is beneficial for the accumulation of sugars and aromatic compounds in the grapes. The mixture of clay, sandy, and calcareous soils in the area promotes good water drainage and encourages the vines to root deeply.
One of the most iconic symbols of Plà de Bages is the lovely Montcau Mountain, which takes on beautiful hues changing according to the season and the time of day. This region, due to its tradition and dedication to the land, produces wines that express the character, spirit, and effort of the people who cater to it.
