Costers del Segre is a Designation of Origin (DO) for wines, located in the province of Lérida (Lleida), in the autonomous community of Catalonia, Spain. This DO covers five distinct sub-zones, each with its own unique microclimate and soils, which range from the arid and extremely hot areas of Les Garrigues to the cooler and alpine areas of the Pyrenees mountains.
The Costers del Segre DO was created in 1986 and has been steadily growing in international recognition for its high-quality wines. Vineyards in this region grow a mix of traditional Spanish grape varieties, such as Tempranillo and Garnacha, as well as international varieties like Chardonnay, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon amongst others.
The area is known for producing a wide variety of wines, including white, rose, and red wines, as well as Cava, a popular type of sparkling wine. In recent years, winemakers in Costers del Segre have also begun experimenting with organic and biodynamic viticulture, enhancing the regional wine production.
Many of the wineries in the Costers del Segre DO offer wine tours and tastings to the public, contributing to the region's burgeoning wine tourism industry.
