Conca de Barberá is a wine region located in the province of Tarragona in Catalonia, North-Eastern Spain. The region is known for its unique geography, which includes a central basin surrounded by mountains. Conca de Barberá is recognised for its high quality red, white, and rosé wines, traditionally made from a variety of grapes including Garnacha, Parellada and Macabeo.
The region has a long history of winemaking, dating back to Roman times. It was later developed by the Cistercian monks in the Middle ages. It was granted Denominación de Origen (DO) status in 1989 and since then it has become known for producing innovative, world-class wines.
Conca de Barberá has a Mediterranean climate characterized by warm summers and mild winters. The region receives abundant rainfall throughout the year with the majority of it falling in the spring and fall. The soil is primarily limestone and well-drained, perfect for viticulture.
In addition to wine-making, the region is also recognized for its rich cultural heritage, featuring many medieval towns, monasteries, and castles. Montblanc, the capital of the region, is especially renowned for its preserved medieval architecture.
