Cigales is a Spanish Denominación de Origen (DO) for wines located in the region of Castile and León. It is named after the town of Cigales, which lies about 10 miles north of Valladolid. The region is known for its hot, dry summers and cold winters, which provide ideal conditions for wine production.
The area has a long history of winemaking dating back to the Roman times. However, it only gained its DO status in 1991. The vineyards of Cigales are located on the terraces of the Pisuerga River.
The region produces both red and white wines. Reds are made primarily from the Tinta del País (Tempranillo) grape, though Garnacha and other varieties are also used. The red wines of Cigales are noted for their deep, intense colors and strong, robust flavors. The region is perhaps best known for its rosé wines, which are often a bright, vibrant pink and offer flavors of strawberry and raspberry.
The DO Cigales takes its viticulture very seriously; the yield of grapes per hectare is strictly controlled and the winemaking process is carefully monitored to ensure the highest quality product.
