El Hierro is the smallest island in the Canary Islands archipelago, which is part of Spain and located off the coast of Africa. The island is significant for being the westernmost island in the Canaries, thus historically considered as the westernmost point of the known world.
The island spans about 278.5 square kilometers and has a population of approximately 11,000 people. The capital of El Hierro is Valverde. It is characterized by its rough and rocky terrain, with the highest point being Malpaso at 1,501 meters above sea level.
El Hierro is well-known for its lush natural beauty, featuring a mix of forests, volcanic cones, lava fields, and coastline. The island is declared a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, emphasizing its ecological importance. The island is also home to El Hierro Giant Lizard, a species unique to this island.
El Hierro is also considered one of the world's first sustainable islands, thanks to its self-sufficiency in power generated from renewable sources consisting of a wind farm and hydroelectric power station.
The island has a few key places of interest including the El Sabinar, which has ancient juniper trees grown into unique shapes, the natural swimming pools of La Maceta and Charco Azul, and the breathtaking viewpoint Mirador de la Peña designed by famous Canary Islands’ architect César Manrique.
