Campo de Borja is a wine region located in the province of Zaragoza, Aragon, Spain. The region is noted for its high-quality, robust red wines produced from Garnacha grapes. The area is often referred to as the "Empire of Garnacha" due to its extensive planting of the variety.
The rich history of wine production in Campo de Borja goes back to the Romans, but it exploded in the 12th century when the Cistercian monks founded the Monastery of Veruela. This became the sculptural jewel of the region and played a crucial role in the development of viticulture.
Campo de Borja was designated as a Denominación de Origen (DO) in 1980. This wine region features various types of soil such as limestone, marl, and sandstone along with having a mild Mediterranean climate that's ideal for grape growing. Humidity, temperature variations and abundant sunshine give the ideal climatic conditions to produce high quality wines.
The cellars or "bodegas" in Campo de Borja range from small, family-owned establishments to large, more modern wineries.
