Checheno-Ingush is an autonomous republic located in the Russian Federation, known also as Chechen Republic. As the name suggests, it is associated with two main ethnic groups – the Chechens and the Ingush people. The region was officially established in January 1934 and later dissolved in 1944 when both the Chechen and Ingush people were deported en masse by Joseph Stalin for their alleged collaboration with the Nazis.
The language primarily used in this area is Chechen, followed by Ingush and Russian. The majority of the population in the region practices Sunni Islam.
Throughout history, Checheno-Ingush has been a conflict-ridden area, especially notable during the First and Second Chechen Wars, following the dissolution of the Soviet Union. The area has since seen numerous conflicts, predominantly between separatist movements and the Russian Federation.
In 2002, references to Ingushetia as a part of the republic were officially removed, and since then the territory has been considered as two separate entities: the Chechen Republic and the Republic of Ingushetia, both entities still belonging to the Russian Federation.
As of today, the Chechen Republic is still an area of tension, with concerns regarding human rights abuses under the rule of its current leader, Ramzan Kadyrov.
