Oltenia is a historical and geographical region located in the southern part of Romania. It is surrounded by the Danube River to the south, the Southern Carpathian Mountains to the north, the Olt River to the east, and the Jiu River to the west.
Oltenia occupies about 24,095 square kilometers (approx. 9,304 square miles) of Romania, which is roughly eight percent of the country’s total area. The region’s most populated city is Craiova, which serves as an industrial and commercial hub in the area.
The land of Oltenia is rich and fertile, making agriculture a significant part of the local economy. The region is known for its production of grains, vineyards, and vegetable farming. In terms of resources, Oltenia is home to extensive oil and natural gas reserves and also known for coal mining.
Historically, the Oltenia region was part of the Romanian principality of Wallachia. The region was frequently under foreign occupation, especially by the Ottoman Empire. Its rich history is evident in the many monasteries, churches, and archaeological sites that dot the region which attract tourists.
Culturally, Oltenia has a vibrant tradition of music and dance, particularly the Romanian style of music called "lautareasca". The people of Oltenia are known for their warmth and hospitality, often welcoming visitors to experience their traditional ways of life.
