Rosso Orvietano, also known as Orvietano Rosso, is a red wine denomination with Denominazione di Origine Controllata (DOC) status from the region of Umbria in central Italy. Specifically, it is produced around the town of Orvieto.
The wines under the Rosso Orvietano DOC are generally crafted from a blend of different grape varieties. The accepted red grape types for this designation include Sangiovese, Canaiolo Nero, Ciliegiolo, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Pinot Nero. Additionally, up to 15% of white grape varieties may be used, such as Grechetto, Verdello, Drupeggio or Trebbiano.
Rosso Orvietano is typically characterized by an intense ruby red color with aromas of red and black berries, accompanied by hints of spices such as black pepper. On the palate, it's rich and full bodied, with a balanced and persistent flavor profile. It pairs well with a range of dishes, particularly meats, game, and mature cheeses.
