San Gimignano is a small walled medieval hill town in the province of Siena, Tuscany, in north-central Italy. It is mainly famous for its medieval architecture, especially its towers, which can be seen from several kilometers outside the town. In fact, it is often referred to as the "Town of Fine Towers."
The town used to house approximately 72 tower houses, a symbol of wealth and power in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. However, only 14 of these towers have survived, but they still create an impressive view that has led to the town being included on the UNESCO World Heritage list.
San Gimignano’s historical center is filled with splendid squares, palaces, residences, and churches. The Piazza della Cisterna and The Piazza del Duomo are two of the most prominent squares in the town. The Collegiate Church, the Palazzo Comunale, and the Church of Sant' Agostino host remarkable works of Italian and Florentine art.
The town is also known for the white wine, Vernaccia di San Gimignano, produced from the Vernaccia grape which is grown on the sandstone hillsides of the town. Besides wine, the town is also renowned for its saffron crop.
The town's setting in the heart of Tuscany, known for its beautiful landscapes, makes it a popular tourist destination. The scenic countryside surrounding the town is ideal for walking, cycling, and horseback riding.
