Rosso di Montepulciano is an Italian red wine made in the vineyards around the town of Montepulciano, Tuscany. This wine was awarded Denominazione di origine controllata (DOC) status in 1989.
Rosso di Montepulciano is made from Sangiovese grapes, sometimes blended with Canaiolo Nero or Mammolo grapes. The wine has a bright ruby red color, and its aroma is characterized by red fruit and slightly floral notes. It has a medium body, with good tannins and acidity. It pairs well with pasta dishes, roasted meat, and cheeses.
Despite its name, Rosso di Montepulciano should not be confused with Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, which is also a red wine from the same region but made with different standards and grape proportions. Rosso di Montepulciano is typically intended to be drunk while relatively young, often within few years of its vintage.
Despite its more humble status compared to its prestigious neighbor, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, the quality of Rosso di Montepulciano can vary dramatically and in some years it has been known to surpass Vino Nobile di Montepulciano in international wine ratings.
