Montecucco is a wine region in Tuscany, central Italy, located between the famous Brunello di Montalcino and Morellino di Scansano growing areas. It gained its DOC (Denominazione di Origine Controllata) status in 1998 and DOCG (Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita) status in 2011.
This region is especially famous for the production of rich, full-bodied red wines made predominantly from Sangiovese grapes. The wines are known for their complex and intense flavors as well as for their high quality. The region is also known for its mineral-rich soils which contribute to the unique flavor profiles of the wines.
There are three types of wine production in this region, including Montecucco Sangiovese, Montecucco Red Wine and Montecucco White Wine. Montecucco Sangiovese must be composed of a minimum of 90% Sangiovese, while Montecucco Red Wine uses a variety of red grapes that can also include Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Montecucco White Wine is typically composed of Trebbiano and Vermentino grapes.
Montecucco region also offers stunning landscapes with beautiful vineyards and olive groves and is rich in history dating back to the Etruscan times. Due to its historical, cultural and gastronomic richness, it attracts many tourists every year.
