Brunello di Montalcino is a prestigious and internationally recognized Italian red wine, produced in the vineyards surrounding the town of Montalcino, located about 120 km south of Florence in the Tuscany wine region. This wine is made from 100% Sangiovese grapes, locally known as Brunello, which means "little dark one".
Brunello di Montalcino is known for its rich flavors and high tannins, making it one of the most robust wines from Tuscany. It typically has an intense ruby red color which turns garnet with age. Aromas can include notes of berries, black cherries, chocolate, and leather.
The production regulation laws for Brunello di Montalcino require it to be aged for at least four years, of which two must be in oak barrels and four months in the bottle (six months for the Riserva). It is not released for sale until five years after the harvest (six years for Riserva). These strict ageing requirements contribute to the wine's elegance, structure, and longevity.
Due to its high quality, Brunello di Montalcino has been classified as DOCG (Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita), Italy’s highest designation of quality among wines. It is often paired with food such as game, red meat, aged cheeses, or it is also enjoyed on its own.
