Salemi is a small town in the Provincia di Trapani in the Italian region Sicily. The town is located roughly 43 miles southwest of Palermo. As of a 2004 data count, the town had an approximate population of 11,017. The town is filled with rich history, being occupied by the Arabs, Normans, Swabians, Angevins, and the Aragonese in various periods of history. It also gained attention in 2008 when the town offered houses for one Euro to encourage population growth and bring people back into the city. Its economy largely depends on agriculture, viticulture, cereal cultivation, and cattle rearing. Tourists often visit Salemi for its ancient castle, churches, and archaeological ruins.
