Ogliastra is a province in eastern Sardinia, Italy. The name Ogliastra is said to come from the wild olive trees found in great abundance in the territory, although some say it derives from Agugliastra, meaning 'pillar of stone'. It is the least populated province of Italy and the smallest in terms of land area.
Covered with vast forests and characterized by a rugged coastline, Ogliastra offers breathtaking landscapes, from the beaches and coves of crystalline sea to the mountainous interiors. Some of its distinctive features include limestone cliffs, gorges, and the Supramonte plateau, well-known trekking and rock-climbing spots.
The main economic activities in the region are tourism, small-scale agriculture and artisan crafts. The region is also famous for its longevity, being home to a significant number of centenarians, and is often identified as a 'Blue Zone', areas of the world where people live much longer than average.
