Carignano del Sulcis is an Italian red wine produced in the southern parts of the island of Sardinia, Italy. The region, formally recognized in 1977, includes the hills in the southwest territory of Sulcis and includes both the municipalities of Carbonia and Iglesias.
The main grape variety is Carignano, which is usually blended with other varieties such as Syrah and Bovale. The grapes produce a medium-bodied wine with bright acidity and moderate tannin content. It often exhibits flavors of ripe red fruits, sweet baking spices, dried herbs, and hints of earthy flavors.
Carignano del Sulcis wines are known for their deep red color and are generally labeled as DOC, denoting their high quality. Many of these wines are matured in oak, producing aromatic complexity and enhancing their structure and aging potential.
The climate in the Carignano del Sulcis region is warm, Mediterranean, influenced by the sea breezes and the sandy soil which contribute to the unique characteristics of these wines.
