Rosso Piceno is a type of red wine produced in the Marche region of Italy, particularly in the provinces of Ascoli Piceno and Macerata. The name "Rosso Piceno" is Italian for "Red Piceno", referring to the Piceni, an ancient Italic tribe that once lived in the area.
The wine is a blend of primarily Sangiovese and Montepulciano grapes, with Sangiovese typically making up at least 30% of the blend and Montepulciano between 30-70%. According to the disciplinary rules for the production of Rosso Piceno wine, other red grape varieties can be added up to a maximum of 15%.
Rosso Piceno has an intense ruby red color that tends to garnet with aging. The wine is known for its rich bouquet with hints of cherries and berries and a full, harmonious and slightly tannic flavor.
In terms of aging, Rosso Piceno can be drank young, but it is also known to age well, enhancing its characteristics over the years.
It's usually served with richly flavored dishes like red meats, game, and mature cheeses. It is best enjoyed at temperatures of around 18-20°C.
In 1968, the wine received a DOC designation (Denominazione di Origine Controllata), which guarantees its quality and geographical origin.
