Marche is a region located in the eastern part of Italy, along the Adriatic Sea. The name "Marche" comes from the medieval Marchia Orientalis, which meant "Eastern Borders". The region is known for its diverse landscape, consisting of rugged mountainous areas, rolling hills, and sandy beaches.
The Marche region has a rich cultural history with numerous museums, archaeological sites, and medieval castles. It is renowned for its arts and crafts, food and wine. It is notably famous for its shoemaking tradition, with many of the Italy's leading designer shoe companies based here.
Cities in the region include the capital of Ancona, known for its port and historic sites, and Urbino which is a World Heritage Site famous for the remarkable historical legacy of independent Renaissance culture. Marche is also known for its native sons and daughters like the world-renowned tenor, Luciano Pavarotti and the legendary film director, Federico Fellini.
In terms of natural beauty, Marche has the Conero Regional Park, featuring panoramic views of the sea, as well as the Frasassi Caves, one of the largest cave systems in Europe.
Agricultural products from the region include olives, grapes, truffle, and a variety of fruits and vegetables. It is also home to Marche-style cuisine which includes dishes like vincisgrassi (a type of layered pasta), brodetto (a type of fish stew), and dishes featuring truffle and pecorino.
