Circeo is a town and national park located in the province of Latina, in the Lazio region of Italy. It is situated on the coast, approximately 100 kilometers south of Rome.
The town is known for its scenic beauty and historical significance. Circeo’s name is derived from the Greek myth of the sorceress Circe who, according to legend, lived on this dramatic and rugged promontory.
In terms of geography, the area features a unique combination of coastal dunes, a large coastal plain, forests, and a high and rugged promontory from which one can enjoy a breathtaking view of the Pontine islands and the Tyrrhenian Sea.
Notably, the whole area has been designated as a National park (Parco Nazionale del Circeo), established in 1934, offering protection to numerous species of wildlife and birds, as well as preserving an area of great landscape value.
Circeo is also known for its archaeological and historical sites. From the Neanderthal remains discovered in the world-famous Guattari Cave to the numerous remains of the Roman period, including Villa of Domitian, an important imperial villa from the Roman age located on the shores of the Lake of Paola.
