Ravenna is a city located in the Emilia-Romagna region of northern Italy. This region is best known for its Roman, Byzantine, and Medieval architecture, and Ravenna, in particular, is renowned as a treasure trove of early Christian mosaics.
Ravenna is known as the city of mosaics due to its stunning 5th-6th century mosaics, decorating the walls of its eight UNESCO World Heritage Sites including Basilica San Vitale and Basilica di Sant'Apollinare Nuovo. The earliest mosaics can be found in the Mausoleum of Galla Placidia.
Ravenna was once the capital of the Western Roman Empire and later of Ostrogothic and Byzantine Italy. There are many other buildings and monuments clutching onto the history of the city, ensuring its historical beauty.
