Albana di Romagna is a type of white wine produced in the Emilia-Romagna region of northern Italy. It is known for being the first white wine to achieve the prestigious Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita (DOCG) status in Italy, which is the highest level of Italian wine certification, indicating strict regulations on its production and quality.
The wine is named after the Albana grape, the oldest white grape variety in Romagna, which is used to make this wine. It has a distinct full body and floral, fruity flavors, often of peaches or apricots, with a good balance of acidity. Depending on the style, Albana di Romagna can be dry, semi-sweet or sweet, including a late-harvest version known as Albana di Romagna Passito made from grapes dried to concentrate the sugars.
Typically, Albana di Romagna is best enjoyed young but some high-quality examples of the wine can be aged for several years. It pairs well with traditional Emilia-Romagna dishes like pasta, seafood, and white meats.
