Aglianico del Vulture is a red wine produced in the Vulture area of Basilicata, southern Italy. The wine is made from Aglianico grapes and stands as one of the premier Italian red wines.
The production region of Aglianico del Vulture received the Denominazione di Origine Controllata (DOC) status in 1971 and later promoted to Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita (DOCG) status in 2011.
The vineyards are located on the slopes of Mount Vulture, an extinct volcano. The volcanic soils are rich in minerals, providing ideal conditions for viticulture. The altitude of the vineyards allows for a cool growing climate even in the heat of southern Italy, giving the Aglianico del Vulture its distinct acidic structure.
The full-bodied wine are known for their rich, concentrated flavors of dark fruit and extremely tannic nature. Over time, Aglianico del Vulture wines develop more complex tasting notes of dried fig, chocolate, and leather.
It is often compared to Barolo and Brunello, due to its potential to produce high-quality wines with great aging potential. This wine is suitable for consumption after a few years of aging but can also age beautifully in the bottle for many years.
Lastly, Aglianico del Vulture pairs well with a wide range of food including roasted meats, game, and hearty pastas.
