Badacsony is a historical wine region located in western Hungary, near Lake Balaton, well-known for its unique white wine varieties. It is also recognized for its striking natural feature, the Badacsony hill, an ancient volcanic formation which provides rich minerals to the local grapevines.
Besides being a wine region, Badacsony is also a popular tourist destination because of its beautiful landscapes, hiking trails, and panoramic views from the top of the hill. The region offers various recreational activities such as wine tasting tours, vineyard visits and cultural events.
The area is populated with charming villages, local markets and traditional restaurants, where visitors can taste local Hungarian cuisine. Historical attractions include the Kisfaludy House, Róza Szegedy House and the King’s Hill.
The wines produced in Badacsony are mainly white. The most popular is the aromatic and full-bodied Szürkebarát, commonly known as Pinot Gris. Other frequently grown grape varieties include Olaszrizling and Kéknyelű.
Badacsony's vineyards are generally located on the slopes of the hill, which provide optimal sun exposure for viticulture. The basalt volcanic minerals in the hill contribute to the unique, crisp mineral character of the wines.
