Thessalia is characterized by its plain terrain in the east and mountainous regions in the west. The region is characterized by the stunning beauty of Mount Olympus in the north, which according to Greek mythology is the home of the ancient Greek gods and the Mount Pelion in the south, homeland of the mythical Centaurs.
Thessalia's major cities are Larissa (the regional capital), Volos, Karditsa, and Trikala.
