Sterea Ellada, also known as Central Greece, is one of the thirteen administrative regions of Greece. It is located in the eastern part of the central part of mainland Greece covering an area of about 15,549 square kilometers. As per the 2011 census, it had a population of more than 547,000 people.
The region is divided into five regional units: Evia, Boeotia, Phthiotis, Phocis, and Euboea, which is Greece's second-largest island after Crete. Its capital city, Lamia, is situated in the valley of Spercheios river.
Sterea Ellada is characterized by its cultural diversity and history dating back to ancient times. Historical landmarks in Sterea Ellada include the ancient site of Delphi, once regarded as the center of the world in Greek mythology, and Thermopylae, the site of the famous battle between the Greeks and Persians in 480 B.C.
The region's economy is largely based on agriculture, particularly in the fertile plains, along with industry and services. It's also gaining prominence in the tourism sector, with visitors drawn by its historical sites, natural beauty which includes mountains, forests, rivers and beaches, as well as local traditions and culinary delights.
