Roussette de Savoie is a white wine produced in the eastern French region of Savoie. It is made from the Altesse grape, also known as Roussette.
The wine is known for its delicate floral and honeyed aromas, often with notes of citrus, pear, almond, and minerals. On the palate, it can range from dry to off-dry and is often noted for its refreshing acidity and complex flavors that mirror the nose.
Roussette de Savoie is considered one of the premier wines of the region and is often aged in oak barrels to enhance its complexity and depth. The variety is relatively rare outside of Savoie, making this wine a unique expression of the region's terroir.
Designated a controlled appellation (AOVDQS - now AOC/AOP) since 1973, the wine can be produced in 16 communes in the French department of Savoie and Haute-Savoie. There are four cru vineyards for Roussette de Savoie: Frangy, Marestel, Monterminod and Monthoux.
Despite its quality, Roussette de Savoie remains relatively unknown and underappreciated, making it a great value for wine lovers seeking out new and interesting varieties. It pairs well with a range of foods, particularly seafood, poultry, and cheeses like Comté and Beaufort.
