Coteaux du Loir is a wine region located in the northern part of the Loire Valley in France. The region is known for its crisp, dry white wines, most notably those made from Chenin Blanc grapes, also locally known as Pineau de la Loire. The lesser known Pineau d'Aunis grape is used here to produce rosé and light red wines.
The Coteaux du Loir AOC was established in 1948, and it covers approximately 80 hectares across several communes. The vineyards are generally located on the north bank of the Loire River.
The terrain of the vineyards is diverse, with schist, sand, tuffeau, and clay in different areas, which can lead to a diverse range of wines. The climate is considered semi-continental, with cool climate influences that are ideal for wine production. This results in wines that are often high in acidity and well-balanced.
The whites from this region are often aromatic, offering floral, apple, pear and honey notes, along with distinct minerality. The reds and rosés, meanwhile, are usually light-bodied and offer delicate red fruit and spice notes.
Winegrowers in the Coteaux du Loir region often espouse more traditional viticultural practices, and there’s an increasing trend toward organic and biodynamic methods. As a result, Coteaux du Loir wines are noted for their quality and expression of terroir.
