Coteaux du Layon is a wine region in the Loire Valley of western France. The region is known for producing sweet white wines from the Chenin blanc grape. The vineyards are located on the hillsides along the Layon river, a tributary of the Loire, giving the region its name which means 'hillsides of the Layon'.
The soils in this region are mainly schist and sandstone, which provide excellent drainage for the vineyards. The river and the south-facing slopes create a microclimate that is favorable for the development of noble rot (Botrytis Cinerea), a fungus that desiccates the grapes and concentrates the sugar, acidity and flavor, thus producing distinctively sweet and complex wines.
Coteaux du Layon wines are characterized by their intense aromas of ripe fruits, honey, and spices, with balanced acidity that makes them suitable for long-term aging. They are often enjoyed as dessert wines, and can also be paired with rich dishes like foie gras or creamy cheeses.
There are several sub-appellations within Coteaux du Layon, including Bonnezeaux and Quarts de Chaume, which produce some of the most prestigious and sought-after sweet wines in France.
