Côtes de La Malepere is a wine-growing region located in the Languedoc-Roussillon region of southern France. It was granted AOC (Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée) status in 2007, elevating it from the previous VDQS classification, and recognizing the high quality of wine produced in the area.
Located west of the city of Carcassonne, the region covers 14 communes, making it one of the smallest wine production zones in Southern France. The vines are planted on the foothills of the Pyrenees mountains, providing them a unique climate and soil composition.
The region primarily produces red and rose wines, with a few producers also making whites. The wines from Côtes de La Malepere are made utilizing a mix of grape varieties including Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Côt (Malbec), Grenache and Cinsault.
The unique combination of Atlantic and Mediterranean climatic influences, with the former promoting freshness and acidity and the latter providing warmth and ripeness, results in wines with a balance of fruit and structure, offering aromas of black cherries, blackberries, and spices, often with a hint of minerality.
Côtes de La Malepere wines are generally known for being full-bodied, rich, and flavorful, often with good aging potential. They are excellent pairing with various types of food including meats, stews, cheeses, and traditional French dishes.
