Saint-Péray is a small French wine growing appellation in Ardèche, located in the southernmost part of the Rhône wine region in France. The area is unique for its traditional production of naturally sparkling wine, made exclusively from the Marsanne grape variety.
The commune, bounded by the Rhône River and the smaller Mialan river, was granted AOC status in 1936. It is named after the town of the same name, which is located in the heart of the appellation. The wine-growing area covers nearly 90 hectares and is developed on the terraces of the right bank of the Rhône River.
Saint-Péray has a mild Mediterranean climate that is ideal for viticulture, with hot summers and mild winters. The vineyards are predominantly limestone and are planted at altitudes of 100-200 meters. The white still wines of the region have a creamy texture, while the sparkling wines have fine bubbles and a rich flavor with notes of honey, pear, almond, and sometimes quince.
Despite its tiny production, Saint-Péray wines are highly valued and have been sought after by wine lovers for centuries. Napoleon Bonaparte himself was said to be a fan, and these wines were also exported to the Russian Tsar’s court. Nowadays they continue to be popular among wine enthusiasts for their unique characteristics.
