Côtes du Luberon, now known as Luberon AOC, is a wine-growing AOC in the southeastern region of the Rhône wine region of France, where the wines are produced in 36 communes of the Vaucluse department. This region is located at the southeastern edge of Rhône Valley, and it received its AOC designation in 1988.
The Luberon wine region spans 3,900 hectares (9,600 acres) and produces an annual output of around 165,000HL. The region is known for its red, white, and rosé wines. The red and rosé wines are typically made from Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre, Cinsault, and Carignan grapes, while the white wines are often produced from Clairette, Grenache Blanc, Vermentino (Rolle), and Bourboulenc.
The climate of this region is Mediterranean with alpine influences, and the soil typically contains plenty of limestone and marl, which often gives the wines from this area a distinct character.
