Clos de Vougeot, also known as Clos Vougeot, is a famous vineyard in Burgundy, France. It is one of the oldest and most prestigious vineyards in the region, with a history that dates back to the 12th century when the land was owned by the Cistercian monks from the nearby Cîteaux Abbey.
The vineyard is set within a walled enclosure, as indicated by the French term "clos". Spread across 50 hectares, it is the largest single vineyard in Cote de Nuits entitled to the Grand Cru designation, however, now, it is divided among multiple owners with varied winemaking styles.
Clos de Vougeot is known for its high-quality Pinot Noir grapes used to produce red wine. The soil of the vineyard, which varies greatly in different parts, and unique microclimate contribute to the exceptional quality and distinctive characteristics of the wine it produces.
Each year, Clos de Vougeot is also the venue for the gala dinner of the Confrérie des Chevaliers du Tastevin, an exclusive club of Burgundy wine enthusiasts.
On the highest part of the vineyard, there stands a grand chateau, Chateau du Clos de Vougeot, which is nowadays a museum and a popular tourist attraction in Burgundy.
