Clos de Tart is a prominent and historic winery located in Burgundy, France. Founded originally by a group of nuns in 1141, it is one of the oldest and most prestigious winemaking estates in the world. The winery is situated in the heart of the Côte d'Or wine region, known for its exceptional Pinot Noir grapes.
The name ‘Clos de Tart’ refers both to the winery and the Grand Cru vineyard from which the grapes are harvested. The vineyard itself is a 'clos', a term in French that refers to a vineyard enclosed by stone walls. Spanning 7.53 hectares, it is one of the largest Grand Cru vineyards in Burgundy.
Clos de Tart wines, made entirely from Pinot Noir grapes, are highly sought after and praised for their elegance, balance and complexity. They are well-respected for their intense bouquet, depth of flavor, and their ability to age gracefully.
The winery follows both traditional and modern practices in winemaking and viticulture, including organic farming, hand harvesting, and the use of customized wooden fermentation vats. Ownership of Clos de Tart has changed multiple times over the centuries, and in 2017, it was purchased by the François Pinault family, famous for their ownership of Château Latour in Bordeaux.
Each vintage produced is often different depending on the climatic conditions of the year, but regardless of the year, Clos de Tart wines remain synonymous with high-quality Burgundian winemaking.
