Chambertin is a renowned wine appellation within the renowned Burgundy wine region in eastern France. The appellation is located in the commune of Gevrey-Chambertin, which is just south of the town of Dijon.
Chambertin wines are exclusively red and are made from Pinot Noir grapes as required by AOC law. These tend to be powerful and full-bodied wines known for their deep ruby color, complex bouquet (which can include aromas of blackberries, licorice, chocolate and earth), long aging potential, and high tannin and acidity levels.
The Chambertin vineyards are found on sloping hillside terrain with eastward facing aspects, which allows for optimal sunlight exposure. The vineyards cover around 35 hectares (86 acres) and are divided into several smaller climats, including Chambertin Clos-de-Beze and Le Chambertin among others. The soils in this region contain a mixture of limestone, clay, and gravel, which contribute to the characteristic minerality of Chambertin wines.
Chambertin has a prestigious status as it's one of the 33 Grand Cru vineyards in Burgundy. The Chambertin wine has been highly sought after historically, and was known to be a personal favourite of the famous emperor Napoleon Bonaparte.
Nowadays, due to its superior quality, limited production, and high demand, Chambertin wine is often expensive and is considered a luxury.
