Saint Julien, also known as Saint Julian the Hospitaller, is a Roman Catholic saint. He is the patron saint of hospitality, in addition to being the patron saint of boatmen, carnival workers, childless people, circus workers, clowns, and more.
The story of his life is largely wrapped up in legend and varies greatly. However, one popular narrative says that Julien was born into a wealthy family. His parents received a prophecy that he would kill both of them. Trying to prevent this from occurring, they sent Julien far away. However, through a series of unfortunate events, Julien ended up killing them unknowingly. Stricken by grief, he vowed to dedicate the rest of his life to doing good deeds for others.
Julien and his wife built a hospital and devoted themselves to care for the sick. One day, a leper came to the hospital and Julien took care of him, even letting the leper sleep in his own bed. The leper turned out to be an angel and pardoned Julien for the sin of killing his parents. Saint Julien is depicted in religious art as hospitable, often shown caring for the sick or lepers.
In addition to the saint, Saint Julien is also a wine-producing area located within the Bordeaux region in the southwest of France. Known for its high quality and high-priced wines, it is one of the most prestigious "appellations" in the Bordeaux region.
