Lalande de Pomerol is a wine appellation in the Bordeaux wine region of southwestern France. This region is located just north of the renowned Pomerol appellation, which is known for producing some of the world's most successful and sought-after wines.
Lalande de Pomerol shares similar soil conditions to Pomerol, consisting of a mix of sand, gravel, and iron-rich clay. However, it is generally considered to produce wines of a slightly lower quality than its southern neighbor. Despite this, Lalande de Pomerol is highly respected as a source of wines offering excellent value for money.
The wines produced here are typically rich and full-bodied, with a velvety texture and the ability to age gracefully in the bottle. The principal grape variety is Merlot, often supplemented with small amounts of Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. These wines are known for their luscious, often jammy red fruit flavors, along with notes of truffle, earth, and spice.
Historically, Lalande de Pomerol was part of the larger Pomerol region, but it was separated in 1954 and awarded its own appellation status. Today, the region covers around 1,100 hectares of vineyards and is home to over 200 individual wine producers.
