Haut-Médoc is a wine growing region in the larger Bordeaux wine region in France. It is located on the left bank of the Gironde Estuary, north of the city of Bordeaux. The soil in Haut-Médoc is characterized by its gravelly composition, which is ideal for the growth of Cabernet Sauvignon grapes.
Haut-Médoc is well known for its prestigious classified estates, with wines often being full-bodied, tannic and offering a rich bouquet of flavors including ripe berries, tobacco and truffle. This region is home to several world-renowned chateaux, including Chateau Mouton Rothschild, Chateau Latour, and Chateau Lafite Rothschild.
Although the district of Haut-Médoc is somewhat less prestigious than its neighboring districts to the south, its best wines are remarkable for their ability to mature over many years and develop nuanced flavors. Apart from Cabernet Sauvignon, other grapes grown in Haut-Médoc include Merlot, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc.
The region has a maritime climate, featuring long, hot summers and cool winters. This climate, together with the gravelly soil, allows for the production of high-quality, intense, aromatic wines.
