Côtes de Castillon is a wine-growing area situated in the Libournais region of Bordeaux, France. This region is known for its quality red wines that are made primarily from Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes. It's located on the right bank of the Dordogne River, east of Saint-Émilion.
Historically, Côtes de Castillon used to be considered the poor cousin to the more prestigious appellation of Saint-Emilion because its wines were often seen as rustic and lacking elegance. However, the region has seen a significant improvement in winemaking techniques and overall quality in the last few decades due to investment and interest from well-established winemakers.
The region's vineyards cover rolling limestone hills, and the soils vary significantly, including combinations of clay, limestone, and sand; these variations in soil types contribute to the complexity of wines from this region. The wines from Côtes de Castillon are known for their deep color, full body, and rich, fruity flavors, as well as their potential to age well.
Since 2009, the area was formally incorporated into the new appellation of Côtes de Bordeaux, but wines from the region can still be labeled as Côtes de Castillon. This lesser-known Bordeaux region offers excellent value, producing high-quality wines often at a fraction of the price of its more famous neighbors.
