Côtes de Bourg is a winegrowing region in southwestern France, located in the right bank region of Bordeaux around the small town of Bourg, just north of Fronsac. Known as “Bourg” or “Bourgeais,” the area is fairly small compared to some of its neighboring regions.
The vineyards in the Côtes de Bourg produce both white and red wines, although they are most well-known for their red. The vineyards predominantly grow Merlot, but also cultivate Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Malbec grape for the reds and Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillon and Muscadelle for the whites.
The climate in the Côtes de Bourg is maritime, with a milder temperature due to its close proximity to the Gironde estuary. The soils are mainly limestone and chalk which contributes to the high quality of the wines.
The wines from Côtes de Bourg are often described as robust, and full-bodied with layers of complexity. Red wines from the region often have a deep ruby color with hints of dark berry fruit, spice, and sometimes leather or earthy tones. White wines are typically fresh and crisp with aromas of citrus and floral.
Côtes de Bourg has been a recognized AOC (Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée) since 1936. The AOC designation is a certification granted by the French government that guarantees the wines are produced in the specific geographical area using traditional methods.
